Profiling & Imaging
Labs performing MALDI MS Imaging usually follow two workflows. An Imaging workflow whereby they obtain molecular images of tissues (large amount of data with the ability to create a density map for each m/z value) and in another workflow, they focus on unknown identified species performing additional MALDI MS analysis in order to elucidate the chemical structure of these species. MALDI MS takes full advantage of the power of mass spectrometry, with the ability to analyse intact molecules, as well as their fragmentation pattern. The fragmentation can be a chemical reaction performed in situ (e.g.: Trypsin digestion) or a secondary ion fragmentation performed inside the flight tube of the mass spectrometer (e.g.: tandem mass spectrometry).
